water charm

Some mornings on waking: causeless joy.

Then I am astonished the way

A clothespin curls in wonder

When touched by wet cotton

Or by a slow sun through soft rain.

Mind opens like a child,

Her day not yet measured

By means and ends.

This borderless body an open water,

Home to itself

In the quiet of now.

In this first waking

A fountain of rain drops falls

In love with the sea.

Only water knows the movement of water.

Hush, don’t seek to understand

Questions will come later.

Look, from a first trembling

A streak of stars sets sail

Surprising even the gods.

All that was frozen falls into

An invisible heart

And miracles are ordinary events.

A river of photons

Touches the tear-soaked faces

Of those who’ve listened to longing.

The dance of drying linen becomes

A song.

The miracle was not that Jesus walked on water

But that we may glimpse eternity

Without drowning.

Sweetheart, it’s getting late, the sun is up.

Love has always been in love with Love.

The sea spills over the rim of a wine glass.

Conversations are turning into storms.

In this wonder of water floats the last drift of damp words.
